Netflix has terminated its sci-fi series 'The Boroughs' after a single season, marking an unexpected cancellation for a show that continues to rank among the streamer's most-viewed programs.

The series, which counts Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer among its executive producers, launched on May 21 and quickly resonated with audiences. Netflix's Top 10 metrics showed the show entering at No. 2 on the English-language television chart during its opening four days with 5.6 million views, before ascending to the top position the following week with 9.5 million views.

The Cost Factor

Production expenses played a significant role in the cancellation, according to reporting. Sources indicated the show carried a price tag of approximately $10 million per episode, with some suggesting the actual figure exceeded that amount considerably.

Additional reporting suggested potential behind-the-scenes friction may have contributed to the decision. The Duffer Brothers' signing of a four-year deal with Paramount reportedly created tension, with one source claiming the arrangement had "embarrassed" Netflix and strained the working relationship. Netflix sources disputed this characterization, framing the cancellation as a straightforward financial calculation.

Prospects for a Revival

The likelihood of 'The Boroughs' finding new life elsewhere appears slim. Netflix allowed the June 15 deadline to extend cast options to pass without action, effectively ending the series. Since Netflix retains full ownership of the show as both its studio and distribution platform, sources indicate revival prospects at another outlet are considered remote.

Cast Reacts to Cancellation

Star Geena Davis addressed the cancellation, revealing the cast was caught off-guard by the decision. "Honestly, I don't know what happened," she said. "I think it's probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it's not being picked up while it's still in the top 10."

She noted that creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews gave the cast advance notice before the public announcement. "Fortunately, the creators, who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we're all terribly disappointed," Davis added.
