The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Ends Tonight: Here's What Led to the Finale

Stephen Colbert's long-running late-night program comes to an end tonight, marking the conclusion of a broadcast that has dominated its time slot for nearly a decade. The finale arrives roughly 10 months after CBS revealed the show would wrap up in May 2026.
When CBS made the announcement public in 2025, the network attributed the cancellation to financial headwinds affecting the late-night television landscape. Yet the timing of the decision sparked considerable debate in media circles, particularly given that Colbert had recently criticized Paramount Global over a $16 million lawsuit settlement involving Donald Trump. Simultaneously, Paramount was seeking government clearance for a merger with Skydance Media—circumstances that fueled questions about whether political considerations influenced the network's choice. CBS firmly rejected these suggestions.
In its official statement, the network emphasized that the decision was driven purely by economics rather than any other factors. "This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount," CBS said.
The network's statement went on to praise Colbert's tenure, noting that the show held the number-one position in late night for nine consecutive seasons. CBS highlighted Colbert's "cutting-edge comedy" and "must-watch monologue," along with his interviews spanning entertainment, politics, and news figures. The statement also acknowledged the show's cultural reach, describing it as "a staple of the nation's zeitgeist" while noting that Colbert's comedy continues to resonate across digital and social platforms.
"We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire THE LATE SHOW franchise at that time," CBS said, adding that the broadcaster is "proud that Stephen called CBS home."
Colbert himself addressed the political motivation theories surrounding the cancellation announcement.
