Hacks Concludes After Five Seasons on HBO Max Tonight

The curtain falls on Hacks tonight as HBO Max airs the series finale of the acclaimed comedy, which stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder.
The show's conclusion marks the end of a five-season journey that was carefully planned from the beginning. Co-creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky designed the entire narrative with this specific endpoint in mind, even revealing the show's final scene during their initial pitch to HBO.
"We've always been going toward that idea," Aniello told The New York Times. She reinforced this commitment in February 2026, speaking with Deadline: "Like, 'It's five seasons, this is what the last scene is.' It is still the same, so for us, it's something we've been building toward for a long time. So I really do hope people find the end of the season as satisfying as we do."
Downs, who also portrays the character Jimmy on the series, shared the creative philosophy behind the decision. "We wanted to go out with a bang. We really wanted to make this a complete circle, and getting the chance to do that is really rare. So we were very excited, and we feel very honored that we were able to tell the story the way we set out to do it," he told The Wrap last month.
The season five finale airs on HBO Max on Thursday, May 28 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
