Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver's departures from Grey's Anatomy appear to have been dictated by financial constraints rather than the actors' own choosing. Both stars exited the long-running ABC medical series after the season 22 finale aired on May 7, which provided their characters—Dr. Owen Hunt and Dr. Teddy Altman—with a satisfying conclusion.

The exits were announced in March, but the reasoning behind them has now come to light. Showrunner Meg Marinis disclosed to Variety that she made the call to write out the pair "shortly after the new year," citing the industry-wide budget reductions affecting network television productions.

"It's no secret what's happening with network shows, and we're not an exception, unfortunately," Marinis explained. Network dramas across the board have faced significant financial pressures, prompting major cast departures and reduced production schedules.

Marinis characterized the decision as emotionally challenging. "It was a super painful decision, from the bottom of my heart. I'm very close to both of those characters and those actors," she said. She noted that McKidd has directed numerous episodes she's written, making the creative process particularly difficult. Despite the hardship, she felt their exit aligned with where their characters' arcs had progressed. "After the ups and downs of their relationship this season, I knew I wanted them to exit together. I thought they finally deserved to be happy, and it became clear to me that maybe they can't be happy in Seattle — and that's where the decision was made."

Marinis acknowledged the ongoing tension between financial realities and creative storytelling. While the show attempts to prioritize narrative over budget considerations, maintaining a large ensemble cast over 22 years presents real challenges in the current financial landscape. "It is pretty tough to maintain a large ensemble, especially for 22 years, in today's financial climate in the industry," she noted. "If it were up to me solely, I wouldn't be writing anybody off ever, but I have to see where the story goes and follow the story."

She also emphasized the complexity of writing out established characters, particularly those with interconnected storylines and shared children with other cast members. Creator Shonda Rhimes was involved in initial conversations with both McKidd and Raver regarding their departures, and Marinis pitched the exit strategy to Rhimes before proceeding with the storyline.
