Will Smith Signs on for David Gordon Green's 'Supermax' in Streaming Project

Will Smith is stepping into a new role as an FBI agent in an upcoming thriller that signals a shift in his recent project selections.
The 57-year-old actor will headline David Gordon Green's Supermax, representing his first major studio film outside the franchise space in several years. Scripted by David Weil and David J. Rosen, the project follows "two FBI agents investigating a murder that's taken place in the world's most secure prison," with casting still ongoing for the female FBI partner role.
Production is slated to commence in mid-August. Rather than pursuing a theatrical run, the film is heading directly to streaming platforms. Amazon MGM Studios secured worldwide rights to the property in a deal valued at approximately $70 million.
The acquisition reflects confidence from the studio in both the project itself and Smith's current standing in the industry. His recent performance at the box office with Bad Boys: Ride Or Die—which arrived two years following the 2022 Oscar incident—proved significant, standing as his sole theatrical release over the past four years. That film's commercial success underscores Smith's enduring appeal to audiences.
Across his career, Will Smith films have averaged roughly $120 million domestically at the box office, cementing his status as one of Hollywood's most commercially reliable leading men.
