Celebrity Stylist Leslie Fremar Reveals She Inspired Emily From The Devil Wears Prada
Celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar has publicly stepped forward as the real-life muse for Emily Blunt's character in The Devil Wears Prada. Fremar made the revelation during an appearance on Vogue's The Run-Through podcast, confidently stating her connection to the iconic role.
Fremar hired Lauren Weisberger, who authored the original novel that inspired the film. The two worked together for approximately eight months before Weisberger went on to write the bestselling book in 2003.
During their time working together, Fremar recalled using a memorable phrase with Weisberger: "I definitely told her a million girls would kill for the job. That was definitely my line because I actually really believed that, and I knew that she didn't necessarily wanna be there." That exact line became one of the most quotable moments in the first film.
When the book was published, Fremar received an unexpected call from Anna Wintour's office. "I got a call from Anna's office saying that she wanted to see me. I was petrified," Fremar recounted. During their meeting, Wintour confronted her about the book, saying Fremar came across as worse than herself in the story. "I wanted to, like, ask more questions, but you can't really ask her that many questions," Fremar explained.
Reflecting on how the book captured their dynamic, Fremar acknowledged the blurred lines between fiction and reality. "It just felt like this exposure. Even though someone obviously advised her to make it fiction, it was really based off of a lot of things that, you know, I lived, she lived," she said.
Fremar didn't hold back about the tension during their working relationship. "I probably was not very nice, and I probably was high-strung because I felt like I was having to do her job as well. So for me, that was really frustrating. I think she was probably just sitting there writing a book and not necessarily taking the job as seriously as I did," Fremar shared. The two never reconnected after Weisberger left the position.
Years later, when Fremar encountered Blunt, she attempted to share her story. "I said to her, I was like, 'I just need to let you know, I'm Emily.' She was not that interested, to be honest. I thought I was gonna get this, like, huge reaction. Like, no. It was like, 'Oh, okay,'" Fremar recalled with a laugh.
Emily Blunt is set to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.
