Top-Ranked Jannik Sinner Ousted From French Open in Stunning Upset

The tennis world saw a major upset unfold at Roland Garros on Thursday, May 28, when 24-year-old Jannik Sinner, the world's top-ranked player, exited the 2026 French Open after losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina in a grueling five-set match.
Sinner's remarkable 30-match winning streak came to a halt during Day 5 of the tournament in Paris, France. The 24-year-old Argentine opponent proved too much for the Italian champion, who battled visible physical challenges throughout the contest.
Extreme heat conditions at the clay court venue played a significant role in the match's outcome. Temperatures soared to 90 degrees, and Sinner visibly struggled under those conditions. He received medical attention between the third and fourth sets as his energy levels dipped significantly.
Speaking to BBC after the loss, Sinner detailed his physical ordeal: "I struggled and started to feel very dizzy, very low on energy. I tried to serve it out but didn't have a lot of energy. In the fourth set, I let it go a little bit trying to have a bit more energy in the fifth. The first one was a very important game and I couldn't hold. Then it went a bit downwards."
The champion acknowledged arriving at the match already feeling unwell. "I woke up this morning, didn't feel very well and tried to keep the points very short. Also in the beginning I was hitting very clean, very good, and then I just kind of hit the wall, and that's it," he explained.
The loss marks a significant turning point in the tournament and ends one of tennis's most impressive recent winning streaks.
