Zac Efron to Lead HBO and A24's 'Angel Heart' Drama Series

Zac Efron is taking on a major television role with a pair of heavyweight studios. The 38-year-old actor will headline a drama series for HBO and A24 centered on Angel Heart, marking a television adaptation of the 1980s film.

Zach Baylin is attached as writer and executive producer on the project, while Jonathan van Tulleken will serve as executive producer and director. The collaboration reunites Efron with A24 following his recent work on the film The Iron Claw.

The series draws inspiration from William Hjortsberg's 1978 novel Fallen Angel and its sequel Angel's Inferno. The story centers on a struggling New York City paparazzi whose job involves tracking down and photographing people intent on remaining hidden. When a mysterious figure enlists him to locate a missing woman, his investigation uncovers signs that influential elites—and possibly supernatural forces—are concealing details about her disappearance.

The original 1987 film featured Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet, and Robert De Niro in its cast. Additional details about the series are expected to emerge in the coming weeks.
